Did you ever notice how most people who start off at a young age taking piano lessons rarely continue past high school? Then, when these people grow into adults many of them will eventually regret their decision to quit. So much so that, many will actually seek out a new piano teacher and start all over again.

Why do most people quit? I don’t think it’s because they’re not motivated or they don’t like music. I believe it’s because they don’t realize why they’re taking piano lessons in the first place. Sure they can tell you that music is important and they probably should be trying harder but the fact is most simply cannot tell you the real reason for learning in the first place.

Do you want to know why? Ok, here it is. I truly believe that music is engrained into our subconscious and most of us truly want a way to express ourselves in ways that words cannot. Not only has music been around since the dawn of time, way longer than most modern forms of entertainment but, music is an integral part of our humanity.

Music resides deep within us and when we hear it, sing it, play it, share it, learn it, teach it or even dance to it, we get a little closer to who we truly are; multi-dimensional beings who are ultimately creative.

So why do we quit? Because we get discouraged when we cannot express ourselves through music the way we want to. Usually this happens because we compare our abilities to others and the distance between the way we play music now and where we want to get seems insurmountable. But, here’s the good news. Nothing can get in your way of learning if you just realize that know matter how you play you cannot be bad. Expressing yourself in any way with music is a good thing and can never ever be bad.

Now, I’m not going to go as far as saying that most piano teachers cause their students to quit because that would mean that it’s intentional. Nothing could be further from the truth. However, I do believe that many teachers lack the necessary skills to teach their students how to play from within. What does that mean? It means that teachers know how to teach notes, scales, rhythm, harmony and how to play a piece of music. What most of them fail to realize is that there is much more to teaching music than just what the mind can absorb.

If teachers knew how to tap into the souls of their students by providing the right motivational, emotional and spiritual information then, it would be easier for their students to overcome all the obstacles of learning to play. In fact, no obstacle is too big to overcome on the way to learning to be a great artist or musician. The drive is within all of us, it just needs to be recognized.

So, how can teachers learn the necessary skills? By learning how to tap into their own creative energy. You see it’s all about energy. It would be impossible for a teacher to share information about energy if the teacher lacks the creative energy themselves. Creative energy comes from within. In my experience, many teachers have never learned how therefore can’t possibly teach it.

Learning to tap into creative energy is a process which can be learned. It’s never too late. The first step to learning is realizing that you are not already connected to this energy. Then, once you realize that you’re not connected you begin to search for ways to get connected. How? By focusing on the reasons you play music. For example; you do not play music to impress rather you play music to inspire.

Music causes emotional changes within us that are positive. Most music anyway. Of course you have to be wary of low energy music that disguises itself as high energy music such as heavy pounding rock with repetitive angry lyrics. But, piano does not fall into this category. Piano music is the perfect outlet to express innate creative energy. If more teachers are to see the results they desire then more teachers will have to tap into their own creative energy.

First we assume that you intent to hire a private piano teacher. Advantages of doing this over attending classes at a school are numerous. Most piano learners end up employing a piano teacher, and if you are serious, you should too.

Piano teachers have different approaches, but most piano instruction advances in grades, from grade 1 to grade 8. Books are labeled according to grades, but teachers often recommend additional books or songs tailored to specific student abilities and tastes.

How important are the Piano certifications?

You may be under the impression that piano teachers must have music degrees, piano diploma or music teaching certification. Actually this is not necessary. If you are a beginner, look for someone who has at least a grade 7 to teach.

A good piano teacher needs more than adequate certification. Practical considerations like him staying near you house is also important.

The most important qualities

Personality, experience and interest in teaching are also crucial. Sometimes, a student and teacher don’t mix. It’s a matter of matching personalities. If a kid is miserable because of the dislike of the piano teacher, don’t continue with that teacher. Your kid might end up losing interest in learning piano.

Typical costs of learning piano starts from $100 every four lesson of 45 minutes for beginners. That is a part-time piano teacher’s price. A full time teacher would cost more; in the region of $140.

Playing the piano is a multi-sensory experience. It involves three of the senses – tactile, visual and aural. To really create music, a pianist must engage each of those senses to be successful. And, to learn to play the piano, it is equally as important to engage all the senses from the first day of study.

Learning to play the piano using the pentatonic scale is a method of study that appeals especially to adult learners. Why? Because it is immediately gratifying and because success comes easily through a multi-sensory learning style approach.

Adults just coming to the piano for the first time, have preconceived notions of what they should be able to play. They have the sounds of great music in their ears, they know good piano playing, and because they are adults, they are convinced they can and will easily learn to play the piano. Unfortunately, traditional methods for learning the piano can quickly turn an excited beginner into a frustrated upset adult who will probably never touch the piano again.

The adult beginner can more easily grasp concepts and hear melodies than young people, however, the technical aspects of playing the piano can often lead to aggravation. The adult understands what is to be done with the fingers and how note reading works, but often the coordination of the visual to the tactile and eventually to the aural senses is hampered.

An adult just wants to make music now on the piano – they want to play songs today – not in two or three years. They feel they should be better faster than their children – they feel they should play now and the concepts will fall into place which will then allow them to play even greater pieces.

This is where the pentatonic method works best – with an adult who is ready to play, is ready to discover how to create songs and is ready to develop technique to play those songs quickly. The pentatonic method uses only five notes – in fact these keys are visually very easy to find as they are the five black keys on a piano. Tactilely, the hands easily cover all five of the keys in a relaxed natural position.

Best of all when simply creating music by just letting the fingers wander over the keys, everything sounds right. There are no clinkers – just beautiful sounds – pleasing especially to that person who is attuned to their aural sense.

The pentatonic method is the perfect method for the adult learner – for the learner who wants and needs to be successful quickly – who wants to make music now – and who wants to play songs on the piano today.

I have the privilege of teaching a wonderful group of adult piano and organ students on a weekly basis. Some of my students are beginners, some are intermediate and some are advanced. The reasons they are taking lessons vary. Some of the adult piano students are taking lessons to enhance and broaden their skills, some are learning pedagogical techniques, some are studying theory and others are learning to play the piano simply for pure pleasure and enjoyment.

Each of these students brings to their lessons a variety of joys, challenges, needs and desires. I have to but listen to them and to their playing to gain a wealth of knowledge and wisdom. So, what do I learn every week from my piano students?

Perseverance – steady and continued action or belief, usually over a long period and especially despite difficulties or setbacks. Learning to play the piano as an adult can be a daunting task, yet week after week, I have students who continue to diligently practice to attain technical proficiency.

Patience – the ability to endure waiting or delay without becoming annoyed or upset. Learning to play the piano as an adult is a slow process and often the technical ability to reproduce the sounds heard in recordings or in the student’s mind is slow in coming. The patience required to achieve a modicum of success in playing the piano is immense.

Fortitude – strength and endurance in a difficult situation. Learning to play the piano as an adult is not accomplished by playing at the piano for a few minutes a week. It requires mastering difficult eye-hand coordination skills which takes an inordinate amount of time at the piano.

Determination – firmness of purpose, will, or intention. My adult piano students set goals for each series of lessons. To fulfill those goals and dreams requires a firm resolve to continue practicing and studying even when the desired results are slow to attain.

Discovery – the fact or process of finding out about something for the first time. Learning to play the piano involves a new language and a new set of skills so is replete with discoveries. Watching my students make discoveries is a great joy.

Happiness – feeling satisfied that something is right or has been done right. When one of my students successfully plays a piece that has been a goal or a dream, the satisfaction for them and for me is incomparable.

Pride – the happy, satisfied feeling somebody experiences when having or achieving something special that other people admire. My students form a happy, connected cohort and admire each other’s successes.

Knowledge – general awareness or possession of information, facts, ideas, truths, or principles. Each of my adult piano students posses a knowledge of music that they bring to their piano study helping them resolve piano playing challenges.

Wisdom – accumulated knowledge of life that has been gained through experience. The varied life experience of my students has opened doors of the world to me that I never imagined existed and each piano student brings that life knowledge to their music in intriguing ways.

What a wealth of information my students share with me weekly as they learn to play the piano!

Her students play songs in a day. “If you’ve always wanted to play piano songs quickly and easily join Dr. J at Play Piano Today for a free tutorial to play the piano.”

Many piano players play songs, which other people have written rather than write and produce their own. In the future those who play the piano will not be needed and all the piano teachers will be worthless unless they are computer programmers with artificial intelligence robotic degrees. Indeed for those who wish to learn to play the piano, they can learn from a robot and not a human instructor full of flaws, attitudes and psychological disorders too.

A robotic piano instructor can be a much better teacher indeed. So first to go will be the piano instructors, as superior artificial intelligent Piano Instructors are introduced, next those who play the piano will no longer be needed, as you can have an artificial intelligent robotic computer play a perfect performance without the flaws of human piano players. There will be no jobs for human piano players either.

How likely is this future? Well, pretty likely. At one time I respected piano teachers and instructors and admired piano players as well, yet today after observing some of their behavior, human psychological flaws and poor attitudes it seems to me we may as well replace them all with robots. Just like we will soon replace dog crap scooper patrols in our parks and lawn mowers. Consider all this in 2006 Ed.

Many parents are taking advantage of homeschooling opportunities to give their young children a solid academic foundation. Learning piano has so many benefits for children that homeschool parents want to give their kids this important musical foundation as well. If this is you, however, you may not realize how easy this is to do right in your own home. You don’t even need to hire a piano teacher, but you can if you want to.

Just as children need their parents to read to them and teach the alphabet, parents can also teach their young children the foundational “music Language” skills for piano or keyboard. If you can teach your child the alphabet, you can also give them an important foundation at home for learning to read music and understand keyboard theory. Even if your young children are already taking piano lessons, piano teachers don’t have time in a 30 minute weekly lesson to give kids the complete foundation they need to read music easily. But parents can. There are so many resources available online for parents who homeschool their children, and piano lessons are no exception. And you don’t have to do it alone. Enlist the help of your homeschool friends.

By starting a piano club you can invite your friends’ children to share this wonderful opportunity. Even if they’re already taking piano lessons they’ll have a great time together, and learn even more. A small-group experience is a valuable way to learn because it models a family. I recommend two to five children. Each child can come to club meetings with their own portable keyboard. Here’s what else you’ll need.

1. A room large enough for each child to set up their keyboard.

2. Portable keyboard stands and benches.

3. A table with chairs for children to play theory games.

4. A computer with speakers.

5. A printer

For teaching materials there are many resources available that you can download with easy to follow parent’s guides. They include stories, games, videos, music and piano lessons. These materials will be great for your piano club, because they’re very affordable. Plus you can print them for each child in your group to use and take home with them. Basic keyboard theory is not hard to teach or understand. With the right tools and resources, anyone can start an awesome piano club in their own home. So don’t wait to give your children the gift of music!

To learn the best way to share the gift of music with children visit Amazon.com for my Piano Bears Musical Stories for Children The exciting Piano Bears Musical Stories for children ages 5 to 11 feature the loveable characters, Mrs. Treble Beary and her new piano student, Albeart Littlebud. Children love following along with Albeart to Mrs. Treble Beary’s piano studio in Musical Acres Forest. Here they learn what piano lessons are all about in a fun way that kids readily understand and appreciate! Piano students laugh and giggle while reading “Little Bear’s Musical Garden” and “Little Bear’s Piano Goals.”

Lots of parents want to get their kids started with the piano without having to commit to regular piano lessons right at the start. As a piano teacher I wholeheartedly recommend starting out this way as it allows your child to become comfortable with the basics before you send off to a teacher, which can actually be very daunting for a young child with no experience of the piano. Unfortunately, most parents aren’t sure how to get started because they don’t know how to teach piano to kids. There are a couple of things that you’ll need to avoid doing in order to keep your child motivated and help them improve steadily.

Avoid Boring Exercises
When you’re trying to teach piano to kids, you’ll find very early on that there has to be a certain amount of repetition – Unfortunately, that’s just one of the things that doesn’t change when learning any instrument. No matter how much we advance the teaching methods and techniques, we’re still going to have to repeat things quite a lot, because a large part of playing the piano is about muscle memory, and your fingers’ ability to make tiny movements without your conscious mind having to think about it.

Fortunately, this doesn’t actually have to mean boring practice session for your child. There are many games and techniques that can be used to help you teach piano to kids without having to drill them in the traditional sense – they’ll still repeat drills, they just won’t realise they’re doing it. Most importantly, remember to keep things fun, fresh and interesting – kids learn things really easily when they’re feeling happy, relaxed and stimulated.

Avoid Unstructured Lessons
Whilst making sure that your child is having fun and your piano sessions are enjoyable and interesting, you’ll also need to balance this with structuring your lessons with a solid plan and goals. In my experience, every piano lessons without a plan simple don’t go anywhere. My big tip here is to make sure that you know what the lesson’s objective is, without letting your child feel that their lesson is too structured. You should remain flexible too.

I highly recommend using a piano software program if your planning to teach piano to kids. These modern software packages are based on in-depth research about how children learn and the best of them are fun, well structured and specifically designed to aid kids when they’re learning the piano. Following a program like this will help to keep lessons structured, fresh and fun whilst both you and your child learn and spend some quality time together.

My personal recommendation can be found at this page. I particularly like it’s well structured progression and fun, clean and clear graphics. These things all really help when you’re starting to teach piano to kids.

There’s more information about how interactive piano software packages can really make piano easy for kids to learn at this page, where I go into more detail on the points in this article.
